Missing a Single or Multiple Teeth?

When a tooth is missing, dental implants can be a great choice for replacing it. A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a missing tooth and supports a custom-made crown.

If you are missing single or multiple teeth there are several ways to cosmetically and functionally address this. If your missing tooth is surrounded by healthy teeth on both sides a bridge is not the best approach. As it would require drilling through healthy teeth in order to install a bridge.

In our Los Angeles office of New Image Dental, we offer to our patients a dental implant as a tooth replacement. Most of the implants do not require that surrounding teeth be modified in order to place the implant.

There are several implant types available. Each one is designed with specific functions in mind. For example, the size, shape, and bone density of the jaw bone is a critical factor in which type of dental implant can be used. Some information about the types of implants we offer to our Los Angeles dental patients.

Root Form Dental Implants

Root form implants are used in people who have wider or deeper jawbones because this offers a wide base of support for the replacement of one or more teeth. Your dentist must expose a section of the jawbone and prepare the area for implantation.

We then carefully set the implant and close up the gum with stitches. Bone will grow around the implant to hold it firmly in place. Once healed, we then cover the implant with a cap that supports the new “tooth”.

The process can take up to 6 months and several dental appointments are necessary to make sure the gums and bone are healing properly.

Plate Form Implants

Plate form implants are better if the jawbone is too narrow or shallow for bone grafting. In these circumstances, the dentist fixes a long, flat implant into the jawbone. The area needs to be specially prepared so that it adjusts to the shape of the plate.

Most plate form implants have a similar healing period where some bone integration will occur. However, some more modern forms of plate implants are actually designed to be used for immediate integration.

Subperiosteal Implants

If the jawbone is badly damaged, it may not be suitable for either root or plate form implants. This can also occur if the jaw is naturally narrow or shallow. These implants are designed to rest on top, with certain sections kept below the gums.

The healing period is shorter for these implants, but they may not last for as long as other types of implants do.

As your Los Angeles Dentist – we recommend that you visit us on a regular schedule for exam and X-rays as does the CDA.
