Periodontal disease – Dentist

Gum Infection and Gum Disease

One of the biggest oral health challenges in America today is periodontal disease (alternatively known as “gum disease”). This common condition affects millions of people worldwide, yet many people don’t take steps to treat and protect themselves.

What is Periodontal/Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease is a common oral hygiene condition which can be treated or slowed down in most cases. Those who are suffering from periodontal disease have sore, swollen or infected gums.

If the disease progresses, you may notice that your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, or that you develop bad breath. If the disease is allowed to progress even further, a condition which is known as periodontitis can develop.

If you develop periodontitis, the tissues which firmly hold your teeth in place can start to be affected. If this is not treated by a dentist, then your gums will begin to recede, you will start to notice big gaps between your teeth, your jaw bone will start to decay, and eventually your teeth will become loose and will fall out.

The further along that your periodontal disease has progressed, the harder that it is to treat it successfully. Therefore, if you notice any of the symptoms of this condition, it is important that you contact your Los Angeles dentist as soon as possible, so that you can begin a treatment plan.

How to treat periodontal disease

If you are only experiencing mild symptoms, your dentist will discuss your oral hygiene routine with you, and suggest areas where improvements can be made.

You should brush your teeth properly at least twice per day, and make sure that you floss regularly between your teeth. Visiting your dentist regularly will allow them to clean and remove any hardened plaque which you are unable to remove from brushing alone.

Once the plaque has been removed, our dentist can offer you tips on help to keep plaque levels low in the future.

If you are already displaying symptoms of severe periodontal disease, then your dentist in Los Angeles may have to suggest surgical options to you. These options can help to treat the issues which are occurring deep in your gums and jaw bone.
