What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a semi-permanent solution to tooth loss or they act as a replacement for extracted teeth. Dental implants are regularly used to offer a perfect smile to people whose teeth cannot be corrected by any other method.

With implants, a surgical post or frame is carefully positioned into the jawbone, and replacement teeth are then mounted onto them. There are lots of different kinds of dental implants available, so it is almost always possible to find a solution that suits a patient’s needs and their budget range.

If a patient’s oral health prevents them from having a certain type of implant, other options are normally available to them.

What Types of Dental Implants are Available?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that one of two styles of implants is chosen. Within each of these styles, there are different subtypes of implant available. You need to ask your dentist for advice about what type of implants may be best for your dental needs.

Endosteal Implants

With endosteal implants, the implant is placed directly into the jawbone, and then the gums are given the opportunity to heal. Once it is certain that the implant has been “taken” and healed properly, the patient must have a second surgery to connect the post to the implant.

Finally, an artificial tooth is mounted on this post. This can be used for single implants, or groups of implants, such as “all-on-four” type implants, where only 4 posts are required to replace a whole mouthful of teeth.

Subperiosteal Implants

With these implants, a metal frame with posts attached is fitted onto the jawbone below the gum tissue. This frame fixes to the jawbone as the gums heal, and then artificial teeth can be mounted on these frames. This method is also suitable for single teeth and multiple teeth.

If you need to have teeth extracted, you need to also ask your dentist about the possibility of having immediate dental implants. Immediate implants reduce the need for multiple surgeries and offer a quicker solution for some patients.
