Procelain Veneers

Why are celebrity teeth are so straight and bright white in color? Maybe you’ve seen images of celebrities showing off their new porcelain veneers. Their smiles are whiter, brighter, and healthier looking. The good news is that you, too, can improve your smile with veneers.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are typically made of porcelain, wafer-thin covers that are placed on the front of individual teeth. This healthy option to enhance the appearance of your teeth is strong, stain-resistant, and well-tolerated by your gums.

Why Should I Get Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are a wonderful option for people with broken, chipped, or stained teeth. Veneers also serve as an alternative to braces as veneers conceal misaligned teeth, uneven teeth, and gaps between teeth.

Veneers at the New Image Dental office are custom-made to fit your mouth and gums. Accordingly, the dentist pick the size and shape of the veneers you need to cover common orthodontic issues.

What is the Process for Getting Porcelain Veneers?

The process for porcelain veneers requires several steps:

1. Consultation

Your dentist first checks to make sure you have healthy teeth and gums. This will be done with an exam and X-rays. You and your dentist will also discuss what issues you want your veneers to correct.

2. Trimming

Because porcelain veneers attach to the front of your teeth, your dentist has to trim the surface of your teeth. Only half a millimeter of the enamel needs to be removed, but you and the dentist can discuss if an anesthetic or sleep dentistry is right for you.

During the same visit as the trim, your dentist will take an impression or mold of your teeth. You will bite down on a metal tray with a putty-like substance to form an impression. This mold is used by a dental laboratory to ensure that the porcelain veneers properly fit and cover your teeth. Your dentist’s office receives your veneers after approximately 1 to 2 weeks.

4. Bonding

Once your dentist receives your porcelain veneers, she will test the fit, color and shape of each veneer. She makes minor adjustments, if necessary, and is then ready to bond them to your teeth. Anesthesia is not typically needed, but you can discuss sleep dentistry options with your dentist.

To prepare for bonding, your teeth are cleaned, polished and etched. Next, your dentist covers your teeth with a special cement to hold the veneers in place. A light dries the cement, and your dentist makes the final small adjustments to trim excess cement, check your bite alignment etc.
