Oral Sedation – Los Angeles
Oral Sedation Dentist Los Angeles
What is oral sedation?
Oral sedation is a process that takes your dental anxiety away and promotes your mind and body in feeling relaxed and peaceful during your visit.
The truth is that many people are fearful of dentists. Why is that? Could it be because many people have had a bad experience during their dental visit? Or have been told by others that going to the dentist would cause you pain?
Well, with oral sedation, you do not have to worry. Your fears will fade away.
As a patient, you need to develop a relationship with your dentist by discussing your fears and past experiences with dental procedures in a calm environment while listening to the dentist’s recommendations and safety procedures and developing a sense of control to eliminate anxiety.
In addition to the development of a relationship with your dentist, oral sedatives, also known as “anxiolytics”, have been developed to help you transition from a state of fear to a comfortable and peaceful dental experience.
How Safe and Effective is Oral Sedation?
Dental procedures can be experienced in a whole new way with oral sedation because it provides you with a peace of mind and the confidence that you will need to continue with the procedure. Hours that you might need for a procedure, would only feel like minutes with oral sedation with an effort to promote a comfortable treatment.
Because there is a lot of anxiety and fear associated with dental procedures, sedatives, and anxiolytic medications were created to combat against that. After decades of use and rigorous testing and research, oral sedatives have a long safety record with many success stories. In our dental office in Los Angeles we have had much success with our patients.
The way that these sedatives have been deemed safe is with the assistance of the scale “therapeutic index”, used by health professionals and pharmacists. The scale shows the safeness of the drug in regards to the number that is provided by the scale. The greater the number, the safer it is. Guess what? Oral sedatives have achieved the greatest number on that scale.
Things to Let Your Dentist Know for Your Safety

- Any treatments that you are currently undergoing
- All medications that have been prescribed to you
- Any over-the-counter medication that you might be taking
- Any herbal supplements that you might be taking
- Consumptions of various foods
- Whether you smoke or consume alcohol
A full description of your medical history has to be provided to your dentist. Even the slightest detail that you may find insignificant, might be crucial when using oral sedation.
Choosing the Right Medication
Knowledge about oral sedation is empowering because it allows you to learn about the various medications that can be given. Your dentist will ultimately decide which medication suits your case better, but knowing about the different drugs can be beneficial for you.
Benzodiazepines are the most commonly prescribed medications for dental procedures, including:
These medications treat muscle spasms, anxiety, agitation, among other conditions, when taken in small doses. Each of these medications has a different time period that it will remain in your body for and the length that the effects will last on you.
The amount of dose that will be given to you depends on how the medication will be taken, whether it is under the tongue or swallowed. It could take as little as 20 minutes to as long as an hour for the medication to take effect. Additionally, some medications have “amnesic” properties, which means you would hardly remember anything from the procedure.
What are Oral Sedation Alternatives?
While medication is the preferred method for oral sedation. Oral sedation can be achieved by two other ways, including:
Inhalation Conscious Sedation: Commonly referred to as “Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation.” This method has been used for almost 100 years by dentists. It works great at relieving pain, but no so great at taking the anxiety away. A small cup would be placed over your nose and the administration of the nitrous oxide gas would begin. Because nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen, it is an extremely safe method. The effects of this sedation almost immediately wear off.
Intravenous Conscious Sedation (IV): Commonly referred to as “Deep Conscious Sedation”. This method requires specialized training in order to be able to administer. With this method, the medication is given directly through an IV, which immediately takes effect as it reaches the blood stream. This method poses a higher degree of risks because the body’s functions can be altered, requiring the assistance of monitoring equipment to make sure that nothing goes wrong.
